European Fire Classification

Require Classification?

+44 (0)808 234 1667

Warringtonfire’s European Fire Classification service interprets fire test evidence to provide recognised EN fire performance classifications using the EN 13501 series of standards.

Classification using the EN 13501 series is essential for communicating the classified fire performance characteristic of tested construction products, enabling manufacturers and contractors to meet technical specifications and comply with regulatory and certification requirements.

Receive your classification reports following a new test programme or submit existing test reports for review and classification.

What is European Fire Classification at Warringtonfire?

European Fire Classification is the process of taking fire test evidence and assigning a recognised fire performance class using the EN 13501 series. This includes EN 13501-1 for reaction to fire, EN 13501-2 for fire resistance of building products, EN 13501‑3 for fire-resisting ducts and dampers, EN 13501‑4 for components of smoke control systems, and EN 13501-5 for the external fire performance of roofs.

At Warringtonfire, our experienced technical experts prepare formal EN 13501 classification reports using validated test evidence. These clear, authoritative documents communicate the classified performance of a tested product and can be confidently relied upon by regulators, specifiers and certification bodies.

Your Challenges, Our Solutions

Regulatory Transition

Approved Document B is transitioning fully to the EN 13501 European classification framework. We help you understand what’s changing, review existing fire test evidence and plan proportionate test programmes to achieve your classification goals  in preparation for the 2029 transition.

Complex Test Evidence

Multiple test reports can be difficult to interpret collectively. We consolidate and review all relevant test data, identifying achievable classifications while clearly communicating scope and limitations.

Confusing Pathway to Classification

It is not always clear how to apply DIAP or EXAP rules to test evidence for the purpose of classification. We review both direct and extended application routes, advising you whether extended scope can be justified or where further testing may be required.

Documentation for Compliance

Regulators, specifiers and certification schemes require clear EN 13501 classification documentation. We prepare structured, recognised EN classification reports suitable for regulatory and certification purposes.

FAQs

Do I need new testing to obtain EN classification?

Not always. Many products can be classified using existing EN test evidence. We review your data and advise if additional testing is required to support the intended classification scope.

Can my existing BS 476 evidence be used inside the EN classification framework?

No. BS 476 evidence remains relevant within jurisdictions that recognise the suite of standards within their Building Regulations, but the EN classification framework only uses the applicable EN test standards and does not recognise BS 476 or any other national test standards for the purpose of classification.

Can Warringtonfire classify products based on existing EN test evidence?

Early engagement with Warringtonfire to review your existing bank of test evidence for the purpose of classification is recommended.

What is the difference between product assessment services and classification services?

Product assessment services provide an opinion on the likely performance of a construction product were it to be tested to a relevant test standard. They are based on suitable and sufficient test evidence and the application of expert judgement.

Classification services formally assign a recognised fire classification (e.g., EI 60, E30 Sa4, REI 120) based on EN test data in line with the respective classification standard. The extension to the scope of the tested product uses agreed methodology and rules such as that given in the applicable EXAP standard.

Is classification the same as certification?

No. Classification assigns a recognised performance rating based on test evidence. Certification demonstrates ongoing compliance and assurance of performance. We support both and can align classification evidence with certification requirements.
